Beyond the Basics

2012 Fly Tying Class

The "Beyond the Basics" fly tying class is a valuable class for fly tyers who want to advance their skills, and learn some techniques that will increase tying speed and consistency--two things that most tyers struggle with. Here is the notice that will appear in the March Leader. Sign up simply by sending me (Bill Carnazzo) an email message at bcarnazzo@sebastiancorp.net .

“BEYOND THE BASICS”

2012 FLY TYING CLASS

This class is for tyers who are in the intermediate to advanced category; it is not a beginner class.  We have to be firm on that point because it is a limited enrollment, and the various tyers are counting on that. The goal of the class is to hone skills of more experienced tyers. The format consists of six consecutive evening sessions from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  All sessions except one are on Wednesdays; the exception is Thursday, March 22. The first Wednesday session will be March 7. So, the dates will be March 7, 14, 22,  and 28, and April 4 and 11.There will be a different tyer at each of the six sessions, which provides members with a very interesting variety of opinions, techniques, styles, and viewpoints. Each of the guest tyers will be very experienced, and each will do something different. The class is limited to ten (10) members. Here is the lineup of tyer-instructors:

March 7 (Wed.)       Bill Carnazzo (Tips, tricks, & techniques for improving speed & consistency)

March 14  (Wed.)    Jim Holmes (Jim's choice)

March 22 (Thu.)      Ray Ito (Classic flies)

March 28 (Wed.)     Dennis Lee (Flies for the life cycle of steelhead)

April 4 (Wed.)         John Daniels (Outside the box tying techniques for trout flies)

April 11 (Wed.)       Jim Hunter (Patterns for Henderson Springs and similar stillwater venues)

We have done this class annually for quite a long time; each time it has been a resounding success. There is no fee, except that individual guest tyer-instructors who opt to provide materials, hooks, etc.., may need to be reimbursed by class participants. Reimbursement is expected at the beginning of the session. The cost, if any, will be nominal. All classes will be held at the Raley's on Douglas and Auburn-Folsom Rd (the one near clubhouse), from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A materials list will be sent to participating members sufficiently in advance to allow for purchase of the necessary items.

To sign up, please send an email to Bill Carnazzo at bcarnazzo@sebastiancorp.net; or, you can sign up at the February general meeting. If we have more than ten members sign up, a lottery will be held.
